Tree Work Services
CSG Usher’s carries out arboricultural services across many industry sectors. All operations are in accordance with the British Standard BS3998.
The company was originally established to serve domestic customers. We receive a
large amount of repeat business, with a majority of new work coming from word-of-mouth
Our qualified estimators and surveyors provide all the advice you need on to enable to you to come to an informed decision about next steps for your trees. Our staff all understand the importance that trees play in gardens and other locations in towns and cities, and we can help you get the very best from them.
Once a quotation has been accepted, this forms a binding contract between ourselves and the client. We would then carry out any relevant planning checks, and process the job accordingly. Once we have obtained permission from the council to carry out the work, a convenient date can be arranged for the work to take place. Should there be a requirement for parking restrictions, we are happy to make all the necessary arrangements.
Once a work date has been arranged, one of our dedicated domestic crews will be briefed on specific requirements for the job. When they have all necessary machinery and equipment to carry out the work safely, they will make their way to site.
Upon arrival, the team leader will introduce him or herself, and any additional members of staff, before discussing the work with you. Please be assured that all our staff pride themselves on excellent customer service.
Planning Procedure Explained...
Regardless of where a tree is situated, there are possible planning conditions to consider.
Trees can be protected, singularly, or in a group, by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO), or by being situated within a Conservation Area (CA). Any tree can be covered by these conditions regardless of the species, or who planted it originally. However, if a tree is under 75mm in diameter (measured from 1m above the ground) then a CA cannot protect it as it is not considered substantial enough.
Protected trees carry serious consequences if they are worked on without written permission. This is why we check the protection status of the trees, and gain any permission required from the local authority on your behalf, for free. Experienced office staff work together with our estimators, and local authorities, to ensure that planning is approved as efficiently as possible; this is also a free service.
Please be aware that planning can be a long process – it may take from six to eight weeks to gain permission.
CSG (Usher’s) has a wide variety of commercial clients. These customers more often than not
require our 24 hour call-out service to comply with their duty of care obligations. We have
successfully undertaken emergency tree work for many years now, and we offer an organised,
Our commercial clients include, but are not limited to:
We work for local authorities on a term or framework contract basis, and also ‘ad-hoc’, generally on Highways trees, and those in parks and on housing sites. Specific training requirements often include Signing, Lighting & Guarding competencies and Excavation in the Highway.
This is a growing market. Work is both reactive and proactive, depending on associations’ individual requirements and budgets. We are happy to carry out individual one-off jobs. We also have comprehensive tree management packages should the client require it. (Please see Client Function). This package may include free surveys on the understanding that CSG (Usher’s) becomes the preferred contractor.
Schools & Secured Housing
In recent years, schools have been able to manage their own budgets, and they have legal obligations to ensure the safe management of their tree-stock. As part of our service, we carry out Health & Safety tree surveys which include work recommendations categorised by urgency. The company has dedicated crews, who are DBS-checked, to implement work of this nature.
Site Clearance / Construction
Three of our health and safety accreditations are covered by an association called
Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP), which is often a requirement to work for the
construction sector. We are also a member of the Construction Industry Scheme.
CSG (Usher’s) has CSCS-qualified staff, fully-trained to carry-out this type of work. We have years of experience in writing full site specific method statements and risk assessments tailored to clients’ needs.
Tree-work for Utilities Companies
CSG (Usher’s) has been developing work for utilities companies in recent years.
We have a strong presence within the national canal infrastructure and are currently
focusing on new opportunities within the rail industry.
Over the last four years, we have been implementing work on an infrastructure management contract for the Canal & River Trust through OCS Fountains. We are now the sole Arboricultural contractor for both the London and South East regions of the canal network.
For us, this was a new working environment, and we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience within this exciting sector.
Because of the unique nature of the working environment, the company has reviewed many of its existing risk assessment procedures, and carried-out specific waterway-related training.
We believe this is a good example of the flexibility and diversity within our company, and we are keen to develop new clients in this field.
Rail - Tree & Vegetation Management
CSG (Usher’s) has historic experience within this field: we ran a railway tree and vegetation management contract with an annual turnover of approximately £6 million in the early 00s. This work was taken in-house as part of a Network Rail reorganisation.
Years later, we believe that there may be new opportunities in the rail sector, and we have recently been accredited and audited with Achilles RISQS (previously Link-up), qualifying us to be a rail industry supplier of trackside tree and vegetation management.
The company is currently certificating staff with relevant PTS qualifications: this will enable us to supply dedicated arboricultural and vegetation crews for the industry.
We are treating this as a new venture with exciting possibilities, and we will target core works for civil engineering companies, and partnerships with other vegetation management companies.
Rod Usher started his career in forestry. In recent years we have undertaken several woodland
management projects: these have mainly been driven by environmental rather than commercial
considerations; for example, working on historic heritage sites, re-introducing old coppice
woodlands, and ensuring strong biodiversity within woodland eco systems.
We have invested in an array of specialist plant to facilitate this type of work including specialist winching equipment and caterpillar-tracked wood chippers. All our tracked chippers are light-weight, and run on rubber tracks which have a low impact on ground conditions.
Communal Gardens and Parks
CSG (Usher’s) has developed a strong client base providing arboricultural services to
privately- managed communal gardens, mainly within central London. On a larger scale, we
also supply complete management packages and routine maintenance for public parks.
A good example is Coram Fields, a charity-funded children’s park open throughout the year. The tree stock consists of a large volume of historic London Planes, some of the largest trees in London. Our maintenance regime includes annual Massaria inspection. This is an essential requirement for such a high-risk location.
